Questions and Answers from Joy about Parakeets of Joy and parakeets in general.

Is a parakeet an appropriate pet for a child?

A parakeet can be cared for by any child who is mature enough to handle the responsibility. However, there are a few things that you should consider before bringing a parakeet home for a child to care for:

  • Is your child mature enough to understand that a parakeet is a living being that needs to be cared for and not a toy?
  • Is your child responsible? Will he or she routinely feed, re-fill the water, and clean the cage?
  • Are you willing to learn the basics of parakeet care and teach this to your child?
  • Are you willing to monitor your child to make sure that he or she is caring for their parakeet?
  • Are you ultimately willing to be responsible for the care of the parakeet should it turn out that your child is not up to the responsibility?

If the answer is no to any of these questions, than a parakeet is not a good fit for your child.

If you can answer yes to all the above, Joy recommends introducing the parakeet as a member of the family, and explaining to your child that he or she has been given the primary responsibility of taking care of it. Unspoken, of course, is that you will assume the secondary responsibility of monitoring your child to make sure that the family pet is being cared for, and helping your child to learn that responsibility.
